Weekly Announcements for Week of 5/31-6/6

Dear SBSC families,

Practice Schedule

Group 2A Monday 8:35-10:00 AM and Wednesday 8:05-9:10 AM, Twyckenham Pool
Group 2B Tuesday 8:05-9:10 AM and Thursday 8:35-10:00 AM, Twyckenham Pool

Group 3A Monday 7:00-8:25 AM, Wednesday 7:00-8:00 AM, and Friday 7:00-8:25 AM, Twyckenham Pool
Group 3B Tuesday 7:00-8:00 AM, Thursday 8:35-10:00 AM, and Friday 8:35-10:00 AM, Twyckenham Pool

PRACTICE NOTES: I was informed Friday the opening date of Potowatomi Pool has been pushed back to June 15th.  I was told to plan for the possibility they may not open at all.  If they do not open, Group 1 will have practice at Twyckenham and Group 2A and 2B will each take one practice off each week.  I have attached this week's updated schedule, June's tentative schedule, and the most recent group assignments

Social Distancing Protocols
As I am sure you noticed Group 2 and Group 3 have been divided. We are doing this to limit the number of swimmers we would have in the pool at any one time.  Group 1 will not be divided.

I am sure you also noticed there is a 5 or 10 minute break between practice groups.  We are doing this to give the coaches time to wipe down any surfaces that may have been touched by the earlier group.  We will also be doing this at the end of each practice as well.  Here are some other guidelines we will be following.
  • Coming to and leaving the pool without using the locker rooms, be ready to swim when you arrive.
  • Athletes must bring their own filled water bottles.  Use of drinking fountains is strongly discouraged.
  • Bathroom use only in an emergency, athletes will be required to wipe down/disinfect the area after use
  • Where feasible entering and exiting using different doors or gates to avoid contact with incoming/outgoing swimmers.
  • No team issued equipment (exception would be snorkels for Group 2 and Group 3).
  • Limit the number of athletes in each lane with appropriate spacing.  See attached sheet from USA Swimming.
  • Coaches will be required to wear masks while at practice.
  • No parents or spectators on deck.  Swimmers, coaches, and lifeguards only.
We are also asking all families to take the temperature of their athlete prior to leaving for practice.  If your athlete has an elevated temperature, is feeling ill, or anyone in the home is ill they are NOT to attend practice that day.  If parents choose to wait for their swimmer at the pool we ask they remain in their vehicles or maintain/follow appropriate social distancing guidelines.

Lightning Safety
Since we are moving to outdoors for the time being I would like to share what our protocol will be for inclement weather. If it is raining only (no thunder or lightning) we will practice.  If we hear thunder or see lightning we will clear the pool immediately and the facility if possible.  We will return to practice when there has not been any sighting for 30 minutes. If it is possible, whenever thunderstorms are forecast we would like the parents to remain at the facility in their vehicles.  This will provide the safest place for our swimmers to wait out the storm while observing social distancing guidelines.
Billing
I will make no assumptions on athletes returning to the club for practices.  You will not be billed unless your athlete shows up for practice.  Our rates have not changed $50 for Group 3, $35 for Group 2, and $25 for Group 1.

New USA Swimming Guidelines-MAAPPUSA
Swimming issued a directive with regards to electronic communication and social media contact between coaches and athletes.  Most of what is being implemented is common sense and falls in line with our club's policies.  One new requirement we will need to adhere to is how your minor child communicates with me.  For several years I have asked swimmers in Group 2 and Group 3 to text/email me if they would be missing practice.  Moving forward, swimmers will be instructed to include a parent on all communication with me.

If you are the parent of a Group 2 or Group 3 swimmer, and have never sent me a text before, please text me so I have your contact info in my phone.  This way if I need to contact your swimmer about missing practice I can be sure to include you.  My cell phone number is 574-276-6057.
I encourage all parents and swimmers to read the full policy.  We are required to keep this policy on our website, here is the link.

Summer Meet Schedule
Indiana swimming announced it will not be sanctioning any meets until after July 13. At this point we have nothing on our schedule until Indiana Swimming releases an update.

As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Weekly Announcements for Week of 5/17-5/23

Dear SBSC families,

Practice Schedule
We will be starting the week of June 1

As of this morning these are the swimmers who have said they will be returning for June.

Group 1-5 total
Asher Culp, Nora Luther, Ellie Maure, Owen Maure, and Clara Rabbitt

Group 2-11 total
Trinity Culp, Landon Eickleberry, Paddy Chapman, Ava Lux, Evan Lux, Adelyn Rabbitt, Jesse Rabbitt, Peyton Stantz, Addy Szakaly, Molly VanDriessche, and Eli Velazquez

Group 3-20 total
Lane Bartmess, Autumn Baumgartner, Forrest Baumgartner, Andrew Berzai, Landon Farmer, Jared Flora, Gabe Groves, Alyssa Kerkman, Alex Knappenberger, Lauren Meyer, Allie Park, Brian Riem, JT Riem, Evie Sierra, Sammy Sierra, Melodie Thibault, Allison Walker, Katie Walker, Cooper VanDriessche, and Mason Young

I know there are several questions about what the practice structure will look like and what social guidelines we will have in place.  Once our pool situation is confirmed (hopefully by the end of the week) I will have all those answers for you.

Please remember, if you are planning on having your swimmer return it is imperative you let me know.  Practice location/structure/social distancing concerns will be determined by our numbers.

Billing
I will make no assumptions on athletes returning to the club for practices.  You will not be billed unless your athlete shows up for practice.  Our rates have not changed $50 for Group 3, $35 for Group 2, and $25 for Group 1.

Daily Training
Until we are back in the water, please continue to follow the training protocol below:

1. Start with the Qswim app.  Ideally use the app on a tablet.  You can view the users guide by clicking here.  The goal is to maintain or achieve the "ideal" swimming shape.  Do each of the tests.
2. Use the Train Heroic app and complete the days workout.
3. Use GoSwim to watch video.   Don't just watch, LEARN
4. Mental Training (still nothing to announce, keeping my fingers crossed for something soon)

On Saturday and Sunday I strongly recommend use the any of the yoga videos we have used in our daily training or watching the YouTube channel Swimming Specific Yoga.

GoSwim App
There have been several studies/reports, both from clinical and anecdotal events, that show watching video of athletic performances stimulates the brain the same way as if the athlete was actually performing the skill themselves.  You can sign up for the app free of charge and view their entire library of videos or you can join the the SBSC training group by clicking on this link.  For anyone serious about swimming watching videos should be part of their daily swimming routine. This is true throughout the year but becomes even more vital until we can return to the water.

Weekly Announcements for Week of 5/10-5/16

Dear SBSC families,

Practice Schedule
We will be starting the week of June 1.  We have acquired pool time at Twyckenham Hills Community Club Pool.  We are also in talks with Arlington Pool and with the VP&A about using Potawatomi Pool.  We hope to have some pool time at both of those sites as well. Our practices will be in the morning.  As of today we haven't been successful in acquiring evening pool time and, realistically, we may not until we are back in the schools.

How this will look for each group and each practice has yet to be determined.  Possible scenarios include practices for different groups at different sites, dividing practice time between groups, alternating days, or really just about anything.  We are in uncharted waters and our number one goal is to just get back in the water.  Practices will include some social distancing guidelines recommend by USA and Indiana Swimming as well as the policies of each pool we are using.   Once all those details have been worked out I will pass them along.

The biggest issue we will be facing is the numbers we will have in each group at practice.  I realize some of you may not be ready to send your children back to practice or may not be able to because of the morning practice time.  For planning purposes it is imperative we know how many swimmers will be returning If you are planning on having your swimmer return to practice starting in June please email me.

Billing
I will make no assumptions on athletes returning to the club for practices.  You will not be billed unless your athlete shows up for practice.  Our rates have not changed $50 for Group 3, $35 for Group 2, and $25 for Group 1.

Statement by the IHSAA
Last Wednesday the IHSAA released a statement regarding their moratorium week.  For those of you that have not heard of the moratorium week it is the week that includes the 4th of July and high school coaches are not allowed any contact with their high school athletes.  Initially, the IHSAA was not willing to budge on the moratorium week.  Their stance changed when Dr. McCormick, the state superintendent, announced all school facilities would be closed until June 30.  They must have felt since athletes and their teammates having spent 3+ months apart adding an additional week was more punitive and was not necessary for this year.  In the announcement it stated athletes and coaches could resume off-season training again on July 1. (According to Assistant Commissioner Kerrie Schludecker swim club coaches can work with their swim club athletes as soon as they are able to practice.)  While the IHSAA does not dictate individual school corporation policies it at least opens the door we might be back in the schools in July.  You can click here to view their press release.

Daily Training
Indiana Swimming is offering Q&A Zoom meetings with three of Indiana's Gold Medalists for our state's athletes.  The space is limited in each meeting.  Click here for more information.  The Fitter and Faster company is also offering on-line stroke clinics for swimmers that are geared toward each age group.  Their classes start this week.  Click here for more info.

Until we are back in the water, please continue to follow the training protocol below:

1. Start with the Qswim app.  Ideally use the app on a tablet.  You can view the users guide by clicking here.  The goal is to maintain or achieve the "ideal" swimming shape.  Do each of the tests.

Weekly Announcements for Week of 5/3-5/9

Dear SBSC families,

Practice Schedule
No start date to announce yet.  According to Governor Holcomb's 5 part plan pools may open again on May 24.  I will be in touch with some of the local pools to check the availability/possibility of us using their facilities.  If it is allowed I'd like to start, in at least in a limited context, on June 1.  If that is not possible, I am hoping we will be allowed back in the schools on July 6.  I will updated as I know more
