End of Fall/Winter Season Start of Spring/Summer Season
At the beginning of this season we implemented several administrative changes for our program.  In past years only swimmers who had qualified for the championship meets were allowed to continue swimming in March.  This yearall swimmers are being allowed to continue even if they have not met any time standards.  Also new for our club is we have eliminated the spring registration for swimmers who participated in the fall/winter season.  If your swimmer is currently registered they will also be registered for the spring and summer.

If you decided you no longer want to participate, at any time please, send an email prior to the first of the month to avoid being charged.  For example if you are choosing to stop swimming after the CON meet I will need an email prior to March 1st.  If you are deciding not to swim the spring and summer season I will need an email before April 1st.

Our last practice for Group 1 and Group 2 swimmers for this season will be March 24th.  Our last day for Group 3 swimmers will be March 30 or 31st.  Our first day of spring practice will be Monday April 11th for Group 2 and Group 3 and Tuesday the 12th for Group 1.

New Prairie Group 2
I was informed that all of our NP Group 2 swimmers will be participating with their middle school team in February and March.  At the end of this month all of those swimmers will be placed in non-active billing groups and will not be billed any training fees.  If you paid for seasonal membership your account will be credited for those two months.  These swimmers will still be on our active roster and can still participate in our meets.  They can also use their times done in middle school meets to qualify for Divisionals or Age Group State.  They will be returned to the active billing groups starting in April unless I receive and email stating you do not wish to continue.

As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me

Weekly Announcements for Week of 1/10-1/16

Dear SBSC families

Practice Schedule
RHS Practice Groups
Group 1 Wednesday and Thursday 6:00-7:30
G1 Elite Monday 5:00-7:30
Group 2 Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 5:00-7:30, and Friday 5:00-6:30

NPHS Practice Groups

Group 1 Tuesday and Wednesday 6:00-7:30
Group 2 Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday 5:30-7:30

Practice notes:  I will be attending New Prairie on Wednesday this week.  No practice on Tuesday at RHS due to a high school meet and no practice on Thursday at NPHS due to a high school meet.

Event Selection
I have received a few emails and some notes in our meet commitment section concerning events swimmers will be put in for meets.  I do read every email and note I receive and when situations warrant the requests I do try to honor them.  For example if there is knee injury that I am made aware I will avoid selecting breaststroke events and the same with butterfly if there are serious shoulder injuries.  I will also honor anyone wanting to limit the number of events because of family budget constraints.

Some of the requests I have received have been centered around limiting the number events so swimmers can perform better in the other events in which they are competing.  I have also been asked to avoid "longer" events because some parents feel their swimmers are not ready.  I do put swimmers in events that will challenge them.  There are times when swimmers swim in these events will struggle but it isn't because they are not physically ready it is almost always because they are unsure of how to pace the swims.  All of our swimmers 11 and over swim thousands of yards at every practice. While it may not seem like it, every one of these swimmers are capable of swimming the 200 free or even the 500 free.  Our 10 and under swimmers may not swim quite as much in practice but all of those swimmers are also capable of swimming the 100 free and most are capable of swimming the 200 free.

My philosophy is to put swimmers in as many events as allowed in every meet.  I will also put swimmers in varying events as often as possible.  I do not believe specialization in one or two events is best for their development as a swimmer or as a person.  For our newer swimmers I try to add a new event each time they swim in a meet.  Sometimes our newer swimmers struggle learning the breaststroke or the butterfly and I am not able to add new events each time.  But, as soon as I believe they are close to getting it correct I will add those events to their list.

Swimming can be a very challenging sport but it also can be one of the most rewarding.  Having a swimmer succeed or achieve a long time goal can be very gratifying for the swimmer, parents, and the coaches.  But there really is nothing that can replace the smile that comes across an athletes face (no matter what the swimmer's age) after they accomplish something they thought they could not do.  If I only placed swimmer in events they were comfortable in they would never get the chance to experience these incredible personal victories.

So trust me as a parent I understand the hesitation that occurs when your child is getting ready to swim in a new or longer event.  I think as adults we have a tendency to underestimate the resilience of our kids.  I have been as guilty as anyone else when it comes to my own children in this regard.   But each time my concerns were completely alleviated when they climbed out of the pool after those events with a smile that seemed to last for days.

IA Meet January 8th-10th
I will post all of our results within the next day or two.  SBSC is having an outstanding meet with 3 sessions left.  Lets go SBSC!

Dual Meet Vs Irish Aquatics January 16th Rolfs Aquatic Center
Irish Aquatics has invited us to compete in a dual meet against their club.  This will be unique for all of our swimmers as the pool will be set-up a little differently then we are accustomed to seeing it.  Prior to our dual meet, Notre Dame will be competing in a their own dual meet vs. Northwestern starting, I believe, at noon.  The pool set-up for the varsity meets has the 25 yard competition set up in the middle of their 50 meter pool.  Our warm-ups will start as soon as possible after the conclusion of the college meet.  Hopefully we can get our entire team watching the college meet so our young swimmers can see where their swimming careers can take them.  The plan is to have the meet last a maximum of 2 hours.  After the meet we our planning something social for both teams and their families to do together.  I will share more details as they become available.

The meet declaration function for this meet has been turned on.  The deadline for opting out of this meet will be Sunday January 10th, one week from today
