Weekly Announcements for Week of 4/26-5/2

Dear SBSC families,

Practice Schedule
No start date to announce yet.  If you saw Dr. Cummings video message from last week you know the Riley pool is getting some much needed repairs.  While it is drained it will be cleaned, underwater lights replaced, and the bulkhead repaired.  They will also be updating several of the mechanical systems in the pump room.  This is certainly a silver lining during our down time.  The hope is to have it all completed by the end of May.

IHSAA Sport Physicals
The IHSAA announced last week they will be allowing the sport physicals from the 2019-20 school year to count for the 2020-21 school year.  Here is their statement.

Daily Training
Here is my recommendation for our athletes continued training during our time away from the pool:

1. Start with the Qswim app.  Ideally use the app on a tablet.  You can view the users guide by clicking here.  The goal is to maintain or achieve the "ideal" swimming shape.  Do each of the tests.
2. Use the Train Heroic app and complete the days workout.
3. Use GoSwim to watch video.   Don't just watch, LEARN
4. Mental Training (announcement to be coming soon)

On Saturday and Sunday I strongly recommend use the any of the yoga videos we have used in our daily training or watching the YouTube channel Swimming Specific Yoga.

GoSwim App
There have been several studies/reports, both from clinical and anecdotal events, that show watching video of athletic performances stimulates the brain the same way as if the athlete was actually performing the skill themselves.  You can sign up for the app free of charge and view their entire library of videos or you can join the the SBSC training group by clicking on this link.  For anyone serious about swimming watching videos should be part of their daily swimming routine. This is true throughout the year but becomes even more vital until we can return to the water.

New USA Swimming Guidelines-MAAPPUSA
Swimming issued a directive with regards to electronic communication and social media contact between coaches and athletes.  Most of what is being implemented is common sense and falls in line with our club's policies.  One new requirement we will need to adhere to is how your minor child communicates with me.  For several years I have asked swimmers in Group 2 and Group 3 to text/email me if they would be missing practice.  Moving forward, swimmers will be instructed to include a parent on all communication with me.

If you are the parent of a Group 2 or Group 3 swimmer, and have never sent me a text before, please text me so I have your contact info in my phone.  This way if I need to contact your swimmer about missing practice I can be sure to include you.  My cell phone number is 574-276-6057.
I encourage all parents and swimmers to read the full policy.  We are required to keep this policy on our website, here is the link.

Summer Meet Schedule
Indiana swimming announced it will not be sanctioning any meets until after July 13. At this point we have nothing on our schedule until Indiana Swimming releases an update.

Weekly Announcements for Week of 4/19-4/25

Dear SBSC families,

Practice Schedule
No change to announce

Continuing Ed/Other Training Options
I watched a great webinar last week on the importance of sleep and how it can positively or negatively impact an athlete's performance.  I recommend parents and swimmers watch it together.  Lots of helpful tips.  Here is the link.

Another great video to watch with your swimmers.  This was led by two Olympians Tyler Clary and Chole Sutton.  Here is the link to "6 Tips to a More Confident Swimmer."

Lastly, we have had some good feedback on the yoga days of our dryland.  If you'd like to continue with yoga on the weekends you can subscribe to the YouTube channel Swimming Specific Yoga.

Train Heroic App
I think our first week went well.  I appreciate all the swimmers who took the time to comment or ask questions.  This program can be as good as we make it.  Please continue to give feedback to our dryland coach.

Summer Meet Schedule
As of today our entire schedule is on hold.  USA Swimming has announced they will not be sanctioning any meets through May.  They will make a decision about June and July in the coming weeks.  As soon as I know more I will pass the information along.

Weekly Announcements for Week of 4/12-4/18

Dear SBSC families,

Practice Schedule
Still no new information to pass along.  Our athletes should start using our dry-land app Train Heroic beginning tomorrow.

Train Heroic App
As of this morning we only have 26 athletes signed up. Parents, if have not yet done so please email me so you may receive the access code.  The athletes should feel free to comment on the workout after they complete each one.  Coach Henley will use the feedback to tweak and develop our program.  The more information he receives the better he will be able to customize our design.

This might also be a good time to sign up for your swimmer's free account on Collegeswimming.com (soon to be swimcloud.com).  As discussed earlier this is the first place most college coaches go to start the recruiting process.

We still have a few families that do not have the OnDeck App.  Those families received an email invite yesterday.  All families received an invite to USA Swimming's Deck Pass this morning.

Meeting With Indiana Swimming
Last Monday I sat in on a meeting with some members of the Indiana Swimming Board and a representative from USA Swimming.  Here is some of things I learned.

1. Indiana University is canceling all programming and events at IUPUI through July 31.  This includes SwimFest (combined Sr. and Age Group State).
2. The Central Zone has canceled the Open Water Championship (6/18&19) and the 14 & U Zone Championship (8/6-9).
3. Indiana Swimming is looking into an alternative format for Age Group, Senior State, and Divisionals.  There is a board meeting on the 20th of this month and they hope to have a decision at that time.
4. A decision on Speedo Sectionals has not been made yet.

There was a lot more discussed including when meets will be sanctioned again, how Indiana Swimming will move forward if the majority of clubs are unable to find water time, and what things will look like at the National level.  Lots of speculation and no real answers. Or, at least, there were not any answers to these issues they were willing to share.

There is another meeting later this week with our region coaches.  Hopefully I'll have more information to pass on to you.

Spring/Summer Registration
Swimmers that are currently registered for the fall/winter season do not need to register for the upcoming season.  There memberships will automatically be renewed.  The registration is for any new families or former families who were not part of the team during the fall or winter. Here is the link.

Families that are returning for this season will not see any additional charges until we know for sure when we will be back in the water.

I would ask all of our families who have a Facebook account to share our registration post.  Thank you to those that have shared our club post or the post from my personal page.  As of this morning the post has been shared 47 times. All post shares will be entered into a drawing for a $25 credit to their swim club account. This may sound like a pointless exercise at this time, but the more our name is being floated out there the better the chance we will be able to attract new families to the club once we are back.

Spring and Summer Meet Schedule
As of today our entire schedule is on hold.  If we are able to get back in the water this could still change considerably. Swimmers wanting to compete will need to commit to those meets.  The deadlines are based on deadlines that were set last year (or best guess for new meets). They may change once the meet hosts posts the meet information.  When committing to multiple day meets please if the option to select the days you want is not available, please leave a message in the available notes section of the specific days you would like to attend. Meets marked with an * are meets that require swimmers to meet certain time standards.  All pool locations can be found on our website under the "Pools" tab

Weekly Announcements for Week of 4/5-4/11

Dear SBSC families,

Practice Schedule
Our hope was to be back in a few weeks. After the governor's latest announcement we are unsure of when our first day back in the water will be.  As soon as I know more I will pass the info along.

Message To Our Athletes
DO NOT LOSE HOPE!!  We will be back and we will be swimming fast again before you know it.  But you need to be ready.  Stay active, eat healthy, stay hydrated, and make sure you are keeping a regular sleep schedule.  As I mentioned in an earlier email we have partnered with Ritter Sports Performance and they will be designing our dry-land program for our athletes.  They will be given access to an app and the ability to find tailored workouts they can do on their own at home right now.  Our plan is to have everything in place so our athletes can start on April 13th.  We hope to have access to the app by the middle of this week so our athletes have time to ask any questions before we start.  As soon as I am given the access code I will forward on to you.  Until then keep doing any of the workouts I have included in the previous emails.

Also, if you haven't already make sure to download and sign up for an account on USA Swimming's Deck Pass.

This might also be a good time to sign up for your swimmer's free account on Collegeswimming.com (soon to be swimcloud.com).  As discussed earlier this is the first place most college coaches go to start the recruiting process.  In fact I received an email last week from Grand Valley State about one of our swimmers.  When asked he said he had pulled up this swimmer's profile on that site.
Here is another great race between Matt Biondi and Tom Jager.  The two premier American sprinters of their era.  See if your swimmer can point out ways for these two to go any faster.  Technique has changed a considerable amount since this 1990 race.

Spring Championship Meets
The entry fees for Speedo Sectionals have been credited back to everyone's account   Also, for those interested in gear from Age Group State or Senior State meet you can purchase T-shirts and other merchandise by clicking here for AGS and here for Sr. State.  There is also an opportunity to purchase gear from Speedo Sectionals.  You can purchase that gear by clicking here.
