Weekly Announcements for Week of 12/26-1/1

Dear SBSC families, Practice Schedule Riley HS Group 1 Tuesday and Thursday 10:00-11:30 AM G1 Elite Wednesday 9:30-11:30 AM Group 2 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,Thursday, and Friday 9:30-11:30 AM New Prairie HS Group 1 Monday and Tuesday 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM CST Group 2 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 11:00 AM -1:00 PM CST Practice Notes: NP Swimmers and parents should use door N18. Parents are welcome to stay to watch practice and masks are optional. Riley families please use door #22. This is the door on the north west corner of the building and faces Fellows Street. If you are planning on staying to watch practice there is a stairwell that is adjacent to this door and this will lead you to the seating area. Everyone choosing to stay to watch practice must be wearing a mask and social distance while in the seating gallery. New Prairie swimmers are welcome to attend their corresponding group's practice at Riley. Thank You!! On behalf of our entire coaching staff I wanted to say thank you to everyone who thought of us. We received generous gift cards, ornaments, cards/notes and lots of holiday snacks. These small gestures truly go a long way! DUNE Rumble in The Region Here are our results, our updated all time Top-10, and our current qualifiers page. Lifeguarding/Assisting with Group 1 and Group 2 The last several years we have had a 4 hour volunteer requirement for our Group 3 swimmers. We also still have several of the swimmers who took our lifeguarding class last fall not finish their 10 hours of volunteering. It helps the club considerably more to have those swimmers fulfill their commitment as opposed to billing those families for the class. The November lifeguarding and volunteer positions are now available for sign-up. USA Swimming Guidelines-MAAPP/Safe Sport USA Swimming issued a directive with regards to electronic communication and social media contact between coaches and athletes. Most of what is being implemented is common sense and falls in line with our club's policies. One new requirement we will need to adhere to is how your minor child communicates with me. For several years I have asked swimmers in Group 2 and Group 3 to text/email me if they would be missing practice. Moving forward, swimmers will be instructed to include a parent on all communication with me.
If you are the parent of a Group 2 or Group 3 swimmer, and have never sent me a text before, please text me so I have your contact info in my phone. This way if I need to contact your swimmer about missing practice I can be sure to include you. My cell phone number is 574-276-6057.
I encourage all parents and swimmers to read the full policy. We are required to keep this policy on our website, here is the link. Fall and Winter Meet Schedule/Dates of Meet/Location/Deadline to commit Below is our fall/winter meet schedule. The first date listed is the day(s) of the meet and second date is the deadline to commit. Swimmers wanting to compete will need to commit to those meets. The deadlines are based on deadlines that were set in previous years. They may change once the meet hosts posts the meet information. When committing to multiple day meets if the option to select the days you want is not available, leave a message in the available notes section of the specific days you would like to attend. Some of the info listed on the qualifiers page may not be accurate. Swims done at the Warsaw meet can not be used to qualify for championship meets. They did not have the requisite number of officials on deck for the times to be added to the USA Swimming database. They count for our purposes of tracking best times and can be used in regular season meet entries just not championship meets. Team Gear The team suits earned from the Swim-A-Thon are in. If your swimmers has not picked theirs up they can do so at practice this week. The spirit wear orders should be in soon as well. We also have some new silicone caps with our club logo. The cost of these caps are $12. If your swimmer would like one please email me and I will give them one at practice and bill your account or they can bring $12 in cash. New Prairie swimmers are welcome to attend their corresponding group's practice at Riley Upcoming Meet Deadlines We have received information for the IA meet in January. I anticipate this will be a meet with a lot of interest. They are accepting entries starting on Monday so we need to move our deadline for this meet to tonight. In year's past we have had a large number of our Group 3 swimmers attend this meet. Unless there is an athlete who truly wants to be in this meet I am recommending against participation. It seemed to me it took a lot out of our athletes especially those who have regular morning practices with their high school teams. It is my opinion it would be better for the vast majority of our Group 3 swimmers to sit this meet out. If your Group 3 athlete would like to attend please reach out to me so we can discuss it. Tonight is also the deadline for committing to the Dune Rumble in the Region meet being held at Chesterton Middle School.

WAR Monster Splash 10/30 The meet information has been posted and can be found on our website. Weekly Announcements for Week of 10/17-10/23

Dear SBSC families, Practice Schedule Riley HS Group 1 Tuesday and Thursday 6:00-7:15 G1 Elite Wednesday 5:30-7:30 Group 2 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 5:30-7:30, and Friday 5:00-6:30 Group 3 AM Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 5:30-6:45 AM Group 3 PM Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 3:45-6:15 PM, and Friday 3:45-5:15 PM New Prairie HS Group 1 Tuesday and Thursday 6:00-7:15 CST Group 2 Monday 4:30-6:30 CST, Tuesday 4:30-6:15 CST, Wednesday 4:30-6:30 CST, and Thursday 4:30-6:15 CST Group 3 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 4:30-7:00 CST Practice Notes: NP Group 1 swimmers and parents continue to use door N17. Everyone choosing to stay to watch practice must be wearing a mask and social distance while in the seating gallery. Swim A Thon Saturday 10/23 RHS I made a mistake when I created the job sign-ups for this event. The parents who signed up to count laps from two seasons ago were still listed. The only way for me to clear those spots was to create a new jobs section and it required me to delete all the sign-ups. If you previously signed up to count laps please log back into your account and sign back up again. I do apologize for the error. There will be coffee/water and donuts for all of our counters. If you have any special requests please let me know. The expectation is all swimmers, regardless of the amount of money raised, will participate on Saturday. Swimmers should report on deck by 7:45 and we will begin promptly at 8:00. The event will end at 10:00 AM or 200 laps, whichever comes first. Group 1 swimmers will alternate between 10 minutes of swimming and 10 minutes of games and relays. Thank you to everyone who received donations this week. We are now close to 95% of our goal amount. I am incredibly grateful for those who have raised money for our club. I believe this is the closest we've been to our goal prior to the actual event. The last day to turn in donations is Saturday Oct. 30 While being so close to our goal is obviously very good news, a closer look reveals it could be so much better. We have 126 swimmers on the team. Only 42 have raised money, 1/3 of our total membership. Of those, only 29 have reached the $75 minimum, and 22 have reached the $150 amount to earn a team suit. As of today I will be billing more than well over half our families to meet their fundraising requirement. Many may not think this is a big deal because the club will ultimately still raise money. To me it is disappointing. I honestly feel like we ask very little of our parent group. This is our only fundraiser we do and have not done it since the fall of 2019. I always hope for more buy in with what we are trying to do with your children. We offer a quality product for a very reasonable price. We have been fortunate to have a very dedicated group of assistant coaches who do what they do for very little compensation. I am hoping after this fundraiser we can pay them closer to what they deserve. Please help show your appreciation by taking part. WAR Monster Splash 10/30 The meet information has been posted and can be found on our website. Our entry has been sent. According to the meet letter they will be announcing the meet start times on 10/26. My assumption is they are waiting to see how many swimmers are entered into the meet before deciding if it will a one session or two session meet. My best guess is that it will be a one session meet and most likely be in the morning. When the information is made available I will share immediately with our membership and post to our website NASA Sprint Meet & CON Skypoint Invite The deadlines for each of these meet is tonight, Sunday Oct. 17. The meet information for both meets can be found on our website. Weekly Announcements for Week of 10/10-10/16

NP Group 2 practices end times are being varied to accommodate pool space for Group 1. NP Group 1 swimmers and parents continue to use door N17. NP Group 2 and 3 swimmers and parents should use door N18. Parents are welcome to stay to watch practice and masks are optional. Riley families please use door #22. For our new families this is the door on the north west corner of the building and faces Fellows Street. If you are planning on staying to watch practice there is a stairwell that is adjacent to this door and this will lead you to the seating area. Everyone choosing to stay to watch practice must be wearing a mask and social distance while in the seating gallery. Intra-Sqaud Meet Thank you to everyone who helped make this night a great experience for our swimmers and their families. I have had a couple of different parents ask about their swimmers times. We do keep the timer sheets and if anyone is interested I will leave them on the desk in the pool office for you to view. Swim A Thon Thank you to everyone who received donations this week. We are now over 80% of way to our goal. The number of swimmers that have received donations has reached 34. That means we have over 90 swimmers who have yet to participate in our ONLY fundraiser. We need your help!!! This year we are requiring all families to raise at least $75. This is a per family requirement, not per swimmer. If a family does not meet that threshold they will be billed the difference. Every swimmer who reaches a $150 will receive an embroidered team suit from Just Add H2O. WAR Monster Splash 10/30 The meet information has been posted and can be found on our website. The deadline to commit to this meet is tonight Sunday, October 10. I will be sending the entry sometime tomorrow. According to the meet letter they will be announcing the meet start times on 10/26. My assumption is they are waiting to see how many swimmers are entered into the meet before deciding if it will a one session or two session meet. My best guess is that it will be a one session meet and most likely be in the morning. This is a great meet for our less experienced swimmers. Especially our Group 1 athletes. They are offering 25 yard events for the 8 and unders and 50's for the 9-10 year olds. NASA Sprint Meet & CON Skypoint Invite The deadlines for each of these meet is one week from today, Sunday Oct. 17. The meet information for the NASA meet can be found on our website. CON has not made their information available yet but has asked teams for preliminary numbers. The October lifeguarding and volunteer positions are now available for sign-up.
Intra-Sqaud Meet Tuesday Oct. 5 Riley High School The job sign-up function is now active and you can register for any of the available jobs. There are only 9 families that have signed up to help. We will not be able to run an effective meet without your help. Please sign up today! We would like all swimmers to be on deck by 5:45 EST. We are going to push our start time of the meet to 6:15 EST. Hopefully this will make it a little easier on our NP families and still be able to be out of the building at a decent time. All of our swimmers are assumed to be swimming at this meet. If your swimmer will be unable to make the meet you will need to decline attendance with the "Edit Commitment" button on our website or by using the OnDeck app. The meet will last approximately 60-75 minutes followed by a team pizza dinner/potluck in the RHS cafeteria. The club will provide the pizzas and drinks. We are asking families to bring their favorite dish to share. Families A-M bring their favorite side dish and families N-Z bring their favorite dessert. If you are making the dessert please list ingredients on a note card to be displayed with your dish. Swim A Thon Thank you to everyone who received donations this week. We are now over 60% of way to our goal. We have over 100 swimmers on the club and only 24 have been able to secrue donations. I am sure by anyone's assesment this would be considered less then ideal. This year we are requiring all families to raise at least $75. This is a per family requirement, not per swimmer. If a family does not meet that threshold they will be billed the difference. Every swimmer who reaches a $150 will receive an embroidered team suit from Just Add H2O. Our team goal is to raise $10,000. This is our only fundraising event of the entire year. We need everyone's help! WAR Monster Splach 10/30 The meet information has yet to be posted on the Indiana Swimming website. I have sent an email to the Warsaw head coach and hopefull we will have information soon. The deadline to commit to this meet has been pushed to next Sunday, October 10. Dear SBSC families, Practice Schedule Riley HS Group 1 Tuesday and Thursday 6:00-7:00 G1 Elite Wednesday 5:30-7:15 Group 2 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 5:30-7:15, and Friday 5:00-6:30 Group 3 AM Tuesday and Thursday 5:30-6:45 AM Group 3 PM Monday Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 3:45-5:45, and Friday 3:45-5:15 New Prairie HS Group 1 Monday and Thursday 6:00-7:00 CST Group 2 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 4:30-6:15 CST Group 3 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 4:30-6:30 CST Practice Notes: NP Group 1 swimmers and parents continue to use door N17. If you are planning on staying to watch practice there is a stairwell that is adjacent to this door and this will lead you to the seating area. Everyone choosing to stay to watch practice must be wearing a mask and social distance while in the seating gallery. Parent Meetings We are planning on having our parent meetings this week. Riley's parent meeting will be on Tuesday (9-21) in the RHS cafeteria starting promptly at 6:00. The cafeteria is on the 2nd floor and is a short walk from the east exit/entrance of the seating gallery. The New Prairie meeting will be on Thursday (9-23) on the pool deck, also starting promptly at 6:00 CST. I still hope to be able to stream this meeting and if my technical skills are up to the challenge I will send those links on the days of the meetings. The meeting's will last no longer than 60 minutes but I will stay as long as needed to answer any questions. Communication During Practice Parent's this is a reminder that once your swimmer is on deck their focus needs to be on practice. Please limit any communication to waving back to them if they waive to you. We are also asking if you need to speak to your child's coach please do so before practice if it is something minor. If will require a long conversation please email me about setting a time up to discuss after practice. I will coordinate/facillitate with the other coaches if they will be needed at the meeting. If there is an emergency and you need to speak to a coach please do not hesitate. But, anything short of that our focus needs to be on swimmers. Lifeguarding/Assisting with Group 1 and Group 2 The last several years we have had a 4 hour volunteer requirement for our Group 3 swimmers. We have previously not enforced this but with such large numbers we will be this season. Starting tomorrow your Group 3 swimmers will be able to sign up to help with either lifeguarding or acting as an "assistant" with Group 1 or 2. We also still have several of the swimmers who took our lifeguarding class last fall not finish their 10 hours of volunteering. It helps the club considerably more to have those swimmers fulfill their commitment as opposed to billing those families for the class. Just Add H2O Our team vendor is Just Add H2O. They are a locally owned swim shop located near the corner of SR 23 and Ironwood, across the street from 1st Source Bank. If you are in need of any swimming related gear they will be able to take care of you. Swimming Apps For all of our new families there are two apps that you will want to get for your phone. The first is the OnDeck app. This app is free and is tied directly to our website. It is incredibly useful and you will be able to do everything you do one our website. The second app is Meet Mobile. There is a small yearly fee but well worth it. This is the app most swim parents use when attending meets. It can serve as a heat sheet, list your swimmers events, and keeps track of their final times and places. Fall/Winter Meet Schedule You can find the initial offerings of our meet schedule by clicking here. We added another meet in November and another in December. Swim A Thon Thank you to the 6 families who have already received donations. We are 17% of our way towards our goal. This year we are requiring all families to raise at least $75. This is a per family requirement, not per swimmer. If a family does not meet that threshold they will be billed the difference. We will also be offering incentives for swimmers as well. Our team goal is to raise $10,000. This is our only fundraising event of the entire year. We need everyone's help! GoSwim Team Education Plan We are starting a new program this year. Our hope is to access the power and the resources of the GoSwim library. Literally, thousands of videos on stroke technique will be just a click away for our swimmers. We will also plan to video and store our swimmers strokes so we can track their development season to season and year to year. We also hope this helps our coaches identify areas of technique we need to improve upon. This will be $10 charge for each swimmer and will be billed on October 1. Here is a promotional flyer distributed by GoSwim for those looking for more information. USA Swimming Guidelines-MAAPPUSA USA Swimming issued a directive with regards to electronic communication and social media contact between coaches and athletes. This year we are requiring all families to raise at least $75. This is a per family requirement, not per swimmer. If a family does not meet that threshold they will be billed the difference. We will also be offering incentives for swimmers as well. Our team goal is to raise $10,000. More details on this event in the coming weeks.
As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. -- John VanDriessche Head Coach South Bend Swim Club South Bend Riley High School (574)276-6057 www.southbendswimclub.com #SBSCForLife
