Weekly Announcements for Week of 10/11-10/17
Dear SBSC families,
Practice Schedule
Here is the practice schedule for this week.
Riley HS
Group 1 Monday and Wednesday 6:00-7:00
Group 2 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 6:00-7:30
Group 3 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 4:30-6:00
New Prairie HS (only for NPUSC students)
Group 1 Monday and Tuesday 6:00-7:00 CST
Group 2 Monday 4:30-6:00 CST, Tuesday 6:00-7:15 CST, Wednesday 4:30-6:00 CST, and Thursday 6:00-7:15 CST
Group 3 Monday and Wednesday 4:30-6:00 CST
Practice Notes: Group 1 at Riley will be on Monday and Wednesday for the next 2 weeks. We will have limited space in the diving well due to the Adams HS divers practicing the same time we normally would. Once high school season starts on the 26th they will have different practice times.
There may be an issue for NP practice on Thursday. Coach Ashley was told there was a possibility we may not have access to the locker rooms. NPHS is hosting volleyball sectionals and they may need the pool locker room space for some of the teams. As soon as we know for sure we will pass that information along.
Group 1 practices at New Prairie, as in years past, will vary each week due to coach availability. But the schedule will follow similar format. Swimmers attending New Prairie practices will enter the building through door N17. Everyone entering the building will be required to wear a mask. Parents will not be allowed on deck. Each athlete will need to fill out the attached form and hand deliver to the coach when entering the high school. All swimmers should come dressed ready to practice. There may be limited use of the locker rooms after practice. If you have any questions regarding procedures for NPHS practices please email Coach Ashley at awojtysiak@npusc.k12.in.us
Due to limits imposed by NPUSC for safety reasons no more then 24 swimmers will be allowed in the pool at any one time. This means we have to put limits on our roster groups. Group 1 is at capacity and all spots are filled, 1 more spot is available in Group 2, and all the spots in Group 3 are taken. If you would like to be added to the waiting list please send an email to me and Coach Ashley.
Covid Precautions
I was informed Friday evening one of our Group 3 athletes, who practices at Riley, was instructed to quarantine by their school. This athlete has not tested positive but was within 6 feet and longer than 15 minutes of someone who did test positive on October 6th. Our athlete did attend practice Monday-Thursday last week. Due to our social distancing practices and a previous conversation with Dr. Fox I believe our athletes are safe. I felt it was necessary to inform our members so you can make the best choice for your family about sending your athletes back to practice.
Team Caps
All athletes, if they have not already, will receive their new caps for this season at practice this week. They will be required to wear them at the meet this Saturday. If they are lost or damaged they will be given another and your accounts will be charged $5.
CON Dual Meet Saturday 10-17
The safety protocols for the meet can be found by clicking here. Parents please go over the protocols with your swimmers. The deadline to commit to this meet is this Wednesday, October 14. If you know you won't be attending please decline the attendance on the website or by using your OnDeck app. I will be sending email invites on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to those who have yet to commit or decline. The cost of the meet will be $7 and athletes could swim up to 3 individual events and 2 relays.
Here are the pertinent times for this Saturday's meet
13 and over
Arrive at Concord in swimsuits by 8:45
Enter the building 8:50
Warm-ups 9:00-9:40
Meet Starts 9:50
Conclusion of session 11:00
12 and under
Arrive at Concord in swimsuits no earlier then 11:00
Enter the building 11:10--if all 13 and over athletes have left the pool deck
Warm-ups 11:15-12:00
Meet Starts 12:10
Conclusion of session 1:30
I will have the entries completed no later the Thursday afternoon. I will also be the coach on deck the entire meet so if you are running late on Saturday or will be unable to make it please text me as soon as you can. Remember there is no use of the locker rooms but restrooms will be available. As of now 1 parent per swimmer will be allowed to attend the meet.
Lifeguard Volunteering at Riley
Group 3 swimmers who need their volunteer hours are able to sign-up for some remaining spots in October.
Changes For This Season
These will be some changes will be implementing for the upcoming season.
Masks: All swimmers, coaches, and lifeguards will be required to wear a mask when not in the water.
Family Technology Fee: This fee was originally used to eliminate the need for credit card financing charges. Over time this has cost club a considerable amount of money. If you would like to avoid those finance charges you can always prepay with cash or check.
Lifeguarding: We will be using a system we used a few years ago with the Riley High School team. Group 3 practices will be using our swimmers to guard practice. Each certified athlete will take a 20-25 minute turn in the chair and hopefully only once or twice a week.
Volunteering Requirements: Each of our Group 3 athletes will be required to volunteer 4 hours each season. This is included in the Terms and Conditions document you digitally sign during registration. Those with lifeguarding will be expected to lifeguard. Those without will be expected to help the coaches during practice. Once a swimmer has fulfilled their volunteer requirement they can earn credit to the families swim club account to help pay for training and/or meet entry fees.
Team Caps: At any given practice this summer we only had a few of our swimmers wearing any of our club gear. This includes caps, T-shirts, and backpacks. If we had a visitor come to practice there would have been zero chance of the visitor identifying our team correctly. We saw gear from multiple high school teams, college teams, and former club teams. I feel for us to become more of a team we need to look more like a team. Staring this fall the only caps that will be allowed during our practices will be SBSC caps. These can be our regular meet caps, Divisional caps or State Team caps. We will be getting some silicone caps for those who prefer that type. We do have some silicone caps with our old logo but a very limited supply.
USA Swimming Guidelines-MAAPPUSA
USA Swimming issued a directive with regards to electronic communication and social media contact between coaches and athletes. Most of what is being implemented is common sense and falls in line with our club's policies. One new requirement we will need to adhere to is how your minor child communicates with me. For several years I have asked swimmers in Group 2 and Group 3 to text/email me if they would be missing practice. Moving forward, swimmers will be instructed to include a parent on all communication with me.
If you are the parent of a Group 2 or Group 3 swimmer, and have never sent me a text before, please text me so I have your contact info in my phone. This way if I need to contact your swimmer about missing practice I can be sure to include you. My cell phone number is 574-276-6057.
I encourage all parents and swimmers to read the full policy. We are required to keep this policy on our website, here is the link.
As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Group 3 Monday and Wednesday 4:30-6:00 CST
Practice Notes: The anticipated cold weather this week may force us to cancel practices. If we are not able to maintain water temperatures where we feel the water is safe we won't have much choice. Hopefully we will return to Riley soon. See below for explanation
Click here to see the list of Group 3 swimmers allowed to attend Arlington practices each day. If you know your swimmer will not be there on any given day please alert me as soon as you can. The earlier you let me know the sooner I can contact other swimmers who wanted to attend those practices.

*Practice Returning To Riley
We may be returning as early as the 29th. I emailed the district athletic director, Mr. Edwards, last Tuesday pleading our case to be allowed back into Riley. I didn't receive a response by Thursday so I asked the Riley athletic director, Mr. Gavin to follow up for us. He received a text response that essentially stated the board vote on Monday (assuming the vote on returning to school) would determine our access to Riley. If any of you are so inclined to contact the school board to encourage a positive vote here is their contact information.
John Anella, President, janella@sb.school
Rudy Monterrosa, Secretary, rmonterrosa@sb.school
Dr. Ruth Warren, District 1, rwarren@sb.school
Oletha Jones, District 2, ojonves@sb.school
Leslie Wesley, District 3, lweslye@sb.school
Stephanie Ball, District 4, sball@sb.school
Dr. Stuart Greene, District 5, sgreene@sb.school
If we do get the o.k. to return we will go back to Riley immediately. Things could happen rapidly so be prepared for schedule changes and following whatever protocols SBSCS will require. If we are not cleared to return to Riley soon we may have to suspend club activities in South Bend.
Any decisions to not practice in South Bend will not, at least initially, have an impact on our club operations at New Prairie. As a reminder our arrangement with NPUSC is only those swimmers attending NPUSC may attend practices held at NPHS.
Potential Meets
We have scheduled our dual meet with Concord for Saturday October 17. The NCISC meet, the one we would normally host, will possibly be hosted by Plymouth Aquatic Club on Saturday October 31. Once we have a better understanding of where our club will be over the next week I will post this information to our website.
Lifeguard Class
Congratulations to all of our newly certified lifeguards. The fees charged by the American Red Cross, instructor and lifeguard wages, the overall cost to club was about $750. We will be requiring 10 hours of volunteer lifeguarding for each of our new guards to be completed before 9-1-21. If individuals are unable to complete those hours in the time frame or discontinue their membership with the club before that date the families account will be charged the full amount for a lifeguard class. We also hope to be able to host this class once a year if there is enough interest from our members.

Practice Returning To Riley
We will not be returning this week. At the meeting I attended I was told no club sports would be allowed back into the SBCSC buildings at this time. High School winter sports athletes (swimming, wrestling and basketball) will have very limited access. Per a new IHSAA regulation these athletes will only be allowed 2-two hour practices each week. I will be emailing the new Director of Athletics and again asking for permission to be allowed to return. We have proven we can practice safely and I would hope the administration can appreciate all we do to keep our athletes safe and consider allowing us to return sooner rather then later.

Weekly Announcements for Week of 9/13-9/19
Dear SBSC families,
Practice Schedule
These practices are being held at Arlington Pool.
Group 1 Tuesday and Thursday 6:45-7:30 PM
Group 2 Monday, Wednesday and Friday 6:15-7:30 PM & Tuesday and Thursday 5:45-6:45 PM
Group 3 AM Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 6:30-8:00 AM
Group 3 PM Monday, Wednesday and Friday 4:30-6:15 PM & Tuesday and Thursday 4:30-5:45 PM
**Practices at NP will begin on Monday 9-21**
Practice Notes: There will not be practice on Monday morning and we may be possibly be cancelling all morning workouts due to the lower than expected temperatures. We took a pool temp check yesterday and the water is below a point where we feel it would be safe on Monday morning. We will be installing solar covers later today and we hope with the sunshine predicted for today and tomorrow it could raise the temperature back to a level comfortable for our swimmers. We will be making decisions day by day. Please check your email, text messages, our website news page, and our Facebook and Twitter pages before leaving for practice each day to check for any cancellations. The practice assignments for Group 3 can be found by clicking here. It it possible there are mistakes, so just let me know and I can correct on my end.
Practice Returning To Riley
The last communication I received was winter sports (swimming) will be allowed back into SBCSC buildings ahead of the possible return date for students on October 5th. When the exact day for us is still unknown.
The Riley pool has been empty since March. Back in November it was decided at the conclusion of our winter season the pool would be shut down and most of the 20 year old mechanical systems in the pump room basement would be replaced. When the initial call to quarantine was made everything was still on schedule with the hope of having the pool up and running we returned to school after spring break. As you know we never returned and most of the custodial staff was sent home for the remainder of the school year. It was also determined for safety reasons no outside contractors were allowed in buildings until after June 30th.
Once July arrived arrived the cleaning and the other basic maintenance of the pool resumed. Once that was completed the mechanical system was all set to be installed. Then the elevator to the basement pump room was not operating. So for the last several weeks we have been waiting for replacement parts for the elevator. But, thank you to the persistence of the Riley head engineer Mr. Pezan and the Riley AD Mr. Gavin they will be attempting to carry the equipment down the stairs to basement. Installation is planned to start on Monday and the pool will be filled as soon as the installation is completed.
So, this long story is that our hope is we could be back at Riley on the 21st. I have been promised updates as they happen. Once we are given our date of return I will pass that along.
If we are able to return to Riley earlier then anticipated, and we did not use all the fundraising money, those funds will be spent directly on our swimmers. I will be sure to communicate all the expenses to you in a future email.
Billing
All families who have returned to practice will be billed the training fees on the 15th. This will be either the monthly ($25, $35, or $50), the seasonal ($166.25, $232.50 or $142.50) or the annual ($247.50, $346.50, or $315). New families joining this summer who were not required to re-register will also see the spirit wear ($17) and the meet surcharge ($15) on their accounts on the 15th.

Weekly Announcements for Week of 8/16-8/2
Dear SBSC families,
Practice Schedule
We will be offering two practice times each day this week. There will be one practice from 6:30-8:00 AM and another from 1:00-2:30 PM, both at Arlington Pool. To find out which practice your swimmer should attend click here to see the assignments.
If your swimmer's name is not listed on the sheet it is because I did not receive an email from you requesting a preferred practice time. If you would like your swimmer included you will need to send me an email stating as much. The morning practice is for high school and college swimmers only. The afternoon practice will be a mix of all groups. Requests will be honored on a first come first serve basis and we are caping each practice at 20 swimmers, no exceptions.
The week of 8/23-8/29 we will only be offering a Group 3 practice in the morning from 6:00-8:30. We have over 30 high school swimmers with the club so not everyone will practice every day. Everyone who wants to practice this week will get guaranteed 2 practices and hopefully 3+. If you know your Group 3 swimmer will not be practicing the last week of August please let me know.
Time Trial with Michiana Stars
Today's is a great day for racing and I am so looking forward to this morning. Unfortunately, spectators will not be allowed. They hope to have a livestream available.
Here are some last minute reminders I sent yesterday.
Have your swimmer at the Elkhart Aquatic Center as close to 9:30 AM as possible
Please fill out the return to swim form and bring with you to the meet. The aquatic center will keep the form on file. Remember if your swimmer is 12 and under they will need to be escorted by a parent to the building.
Please have your swimmer bring a mask. Swimmers will be required to wear one when not in the water.
Please use the attached maps for parking/drop-off/and entrance into the facility.
Locker room use is VERY limited. The family locker rooms may be available but those will only be single person use. Swimmers should come to the pool in their suits ready to swim .
I will have caps with me for all of our new swimmers and those returning swimmers who need a cap.
If your swimmer is 13 years old or older and has at least one Divisional cut in their age group they are eligible (and recommended) to wear a tech suit to race in today.
Fall Winter Registration
The upcoming season registration is now open. Due to uncertainty of returning to the pool on September 8th training fees will not be billed during registration. You will still be billed the USA Swimming, spirit wear, and meet surcharge fees. The reason it has been set-up this way is regardless of when we return the three items that are being billed will not change in price. The seasonal and annual fees could change if we are unable to return to RHS or NPHS in September. because if you choose the annual or seasonal membership. When it is confirmed when we will back in the high schools accounts will be billed accordingly.
Be aware of the practice group you select for your swimmer. You will have the choice of the group (which is decided by age), location (only NPUSC students eligible for NP practices) and the payment option. The payment option will either be monthly, seasonally, or annually. Once we are given the green light to begin practices your account will be billed based on the payment option you selected. For example if we return on September 8 and you have a Group 2 swimmer you be $35 if select month. If you select annually you will be billed $346.50. If we are unable to start until October monthly Group 2 swimmers will still be billed $35 but the annual would only be billed $315.
As of today we still hope to start the fall and winter season the day after Labor Day, Tuesday September 8, at both NPHS and RHS.
If you registered for the first time this summer you will not be required to register for the fall and winter season. All other members will be required to do so.
If you are a new family to our club this summer please send me a digital copy of your swimmers birth certificate. If you are able to scan it into a pdf that is the best, if not please take a pic and email that to me.

Social Distancing Protocols
We are also asking all families to take the temperature of their athlete prior to leaving for practice. If your athlete has an elevated temperature, is feeling ill, or anyone in the home is ill they are NOT to attend practice that day. If parents choose to wait for their swimmer at the pool we ask they remain in their vehicles or maintain/follow appropriate social distancing guidelines.
These are the protocols we have been and will continue to follow:
Divide groups where necessary to limit the number of swimmers in the pool at any one time
Coming to and leaving the pool without using the locker rooms, be ready to swim when you arrive.
Athletes must bring their own filled water bottles. Use of drinking fountains is strongly discouraged.
Bathroom use only in an emergency, athletes will be required to wipe down/disinfect the area after use
Entering and exiting using different doors or gates to avoid contact with incoming/outgoing swimmers.
No team issued equipment (exception would be snorkels for Group 2 and Group 3).
Limit the number of athletes in each lane with appropriate spacing.
Coaches will be required to wear masks while at practice.
Coaches will wipe down areas swimmers were between and after practice groups.
No parents or spectators on deck. Swimmers, coaches, and lifeguards only.
Lightning Safety
This is our protocol will be for inclement weather. If it is raining only (no thunder or lightning) we will practice. If we hear thunder or see lightning we will clear the pool immediately and the facility if possible. We will return to practice when there has not been any sighting for 30 minutes. If it is possible, whenever thunderstorms are forecast we would like the parents to remain at the facility in their vehicles. This will provide the safest place for our swimmers to wait out the storm while observing social distancing guidelines.

Time Trial with Michiana Stars 8/15 & 8/16
At this time I only have limited information on the time frame. The aquatic center management has not been very timely returning phone calls. If you are still thinking having your swimmer attend this meet you will need to send me an email no later then 5:00 PM today. The function for committing to the meet has been turned off on our website. Again if you are thinking about swimming this coming weekend and have yet to commit please send me an email.
Here is the very, very tentative timeline:
Saturday
Warm-ups 1:30-2:10
Meet Stars 2:15
Sunday
Warm-ups 11:00-11:40
Meet Starts 11:45
Based on the numbers signed up for the meet it looks like each day will take about 2-2.5 hours each day including the warmup. There isn't a time listed for your swimmer to be on deck as of yet. I do know they will be checking the temperature of each athlete and asking them a few questions before allowing them entrance to the pool. We will need to plan accordingly for what will be a longer process then normal.
There is a scheduled phone call later this morning with the aquatic center management. As soon as I know more I will pass that information along. Again, thank you for your patience.
Fall Winter Registration
The upcoming season registration is now open. Due to uncertainty of returning to the pool on September 8th training fees will not be billed during registration. You will notice it says billing will occur in September. This may or may not be the case. When it is confirmed when we will back in Riley and NPHS accounts will be billed accordingly.
If you have a Group 2 swimmer and you select monthly you be billed $35. If you select annually you will be billed $346.50.
